Taking a look through everything we covered this semester I was quite overwhelmed. Although there are some important takeaways this class has given me. Reading Ending Ableism In Education by Heir, I realized how messed up some schooling can be. Disculding students from activities and not allowing them to be themselves is cruel to a child and can affect them socially with other students and in other activities. Teachers need to be equipped for all types of students, even the ones who need extra support in the classroom, they should simply be provided those tools from the start and that all starts with the education we have today.

Making 'personalized learning' work for teachers and ...

In the article from Rodriguez I learned how important it is to know or at least try to learn another language. Knowing other languages provided better understanding of culture which is extremely important in the teaching world. As students are learning everyday if you are not able to teach them because of a language barrier, once again that is a tool we should be given and taught now so we are ready when we become teachers. In my classroom for Inspiring minds I was given two children who don't speak english. As someone who only knows english and some sign language this was a challenge I came across myself. I did take away that google translate is a beautiful thing but I definitely need to learn spanish or at least the basics before being in another classroom.

Spanish Classrooms Tour: A Look into Over 30 Classrooms

Jumping all the way back to blog4 Privilege, Power and Difference, Johnson inspires individuals to make that change. Johnson advocates the need for "acknowledging your privilege" which you may be born with.As the major problem in society is to make the change, you need to understand what your talking about and where it came from. I will still stand on the fact that it is something we should be able to talk about in a room with all kinds of people with no hard feelings and no judgement. Being able to talk about these things brings light to common issues we deal with on the daily.

  1. I also chose "Aria" as a piece of literature that resonated with me. Unfortunately, children with language barriers are treated as an inconvenience because not everyone can speak their language. However, educators are supposed to be co-learners with their students. Students should not be forced into assimilation and neglect their native language. This threatens the lifepsan of culture and language. They die out when the are not used.

  2. I agree with your last remark on being able to communicate with a diverse group of individuals and it is a problem. Too many people are afraid to speak up or ask questions for fear of insulting another person. Communicating is the only way we can learn and change behaviors.

  3. There's nothing worse than a student feeling that they don't belong or are not included in their classroom culture. If educators can respect and make an effort to include all, then hopefully students can model that behavior toward their classmates.

  4. It is interesting to look back on Johnson's "Privilege, Power, and Difference" as I first thought when reading it that it seemed very redundant with material that I felt was already practiced and believed by most people. Now, having read all of our other readings, I feel that Johnson's words take on a much deeper and more important meaning. The other readings have really supplied a context to what Johnson was trying to express.
