Looking through my peers posts Gabrielle's really stuck out to me. I fully agree with her second paragraph when she quoted "all students need a safe a supportive school environment to progress academically and developmentally". Having a safe a supportive environment will lead to more consistency with children and allow them to fully share their true feelings. Kids will feel more confident within themselves if they feel comfortable or "safe" around you. If a child feels neglected by you they most likely won't do well in a classroom with you either. All children need to feel welcomed and feel like they are able to be themselves in order to have healthy learning environment. Safety is needed in all schools and many schools need to work on improving their security systems to have a safer environment for students.

Rigl 16-2-17 Right To a Safe School
"asserts that each student, staff member, teacher, and administrator has a right to attend and/or work at a school which is safe and secure, and which is conducive to learning, and which is free from the threat, actual or implied, of physical harm by a disruptive student. -"

Reflection on Video
Watching "Woke read alouds", I was very intrigued. The book Ki was reading was called They, she, he easy as ABC . This is an inclusive children's book mainly focused on pronouns. I thought it was important she added the clip in between the video of her apologizing about reading the name wrong because she talks very highly about respecting and knowing people's names and pronouns. Some children in this book referred to more than one person and preferred to be called other names even if it didn't match their birth gender, Ki explained that it's okay if you make a mistake and call someone the wrong name just make sure you correct yourself and apologize. Ki seemed to have a very outgoing personality which is good for children, and it can attract children, so her point will get across while reading the story.

  1. I definitely agree that children need to feel heard and valued in order to be successful in the classroom. If they don't feel wanted and feel that the teachers care for them personally, they won't be able to focus and invest in the material authentically.

  2. Hi Isabella, I'm glad you were inspired by my post and also support safety in classrooms. Without our students feeling "looked after" they can not trust their teachers and be motivated to learn.

  3. I'm happy you pointed out the part of the video where Ki corrected themself. This was super important to see that it is natural to make a mistake. However, it is also important to be able to point out that mistake and apologize for it,
