Ending Ableism in Education, Hehir
Argument: The author Hehir is talking about ending ableism in education, but there are many things to take from this article. It is important to never disclude students from school activities. Hehir is a major advocate for inclusive education, where students with disabilities are educated in a regular classroom, right next to their non disabled peers. He is also a strong advocate for IEP ( individual learning plans ). These are tailored for the students specific needs, and the student develops with input through their teachers, parents and peers. Teachers training is extremely important and it is important for are educators to know necessary support for students who need extra help and teachers should be equipped with the skills and knowledge to these different learning techniques/helping procedures for students. He also stresses the fact that collaboration is also extremely important, if we can all come together with our ideas we can make plans for everyone to succeed in the classroom. In conclusion Hehirs ideas for ending ableism in education revolve around the principles of inclusive education, individualized support, and collaboration overall. By implementing these concepts hehir believes that the education system can be inclusive for all students, regardless of their abilities or disabilities.
I do believe that Hehir strives for inclusive education. It is rather difficult to implement this. In the video we had to watch, it said that a disability is a social status, it is not a physical status. This has to be revered in order to make more inclusive classrooms.
ReplyDeleteYou're most certainly correct Isabella that teacher training and detailed attention to IEP's are extremely important, but also tricky to navigate. Having all students of differing abilities and education styles in the same classroom is a useful and fair way for equal opportunity to all students.
ReplyDeleteIt is definitely necessary to collaborate and have professional workshops to help educate and spread awareness of how to educate those who struggle with different disabilities. All students are entitled to a fair education.
