The Trouble We're In
Allan Johnson
The Legacy of Racism Johnson argues that racism is not just an historical artifact yet an enduring system filled with both advantages and disadvantages that are constantly shaping the world we live in. There are many structural inequalities included. Johnson contends that racism is not only about the act of prejudice but the structures within society itself. This includes, Criminal Justice, Housing, Systems of Education and even sometimes employment among others. Johnson acts on this by advocating for systemic change and the need for individuals to actively participate and work against racism. In order to address racism you need to acknowledge privilege and always be on the lookout to challenge active systems that promote racial inequalities.
I believe racism is taken as a sensitive subject to some though it shouldn't. It is something we should be able to talk about because it did happen and there is still racism today. As we are in a sick generation it's good to notice the things going on around you.
I definitely agree that many get offended when talking about racism. We cannot be naive to the prejudice around us or we will become part of the problem.
ReplyDeleteBy having difficult conversations about controversial issues, helps and brings to light common issues we all deal with. Over time perhaps these societal inequalities can be improved since we are all stuck in a system that most people do not like. All it takes is for our generation to stand up and progress can be ahead in all of our futures.
ReplyDeleteIn the reading by Tatum, she also stresses the importance of using certain language in order to have discussions about racism and social injustices. I do not understand how some are expected to have these conversations when they cannot use the words that they must in order to convey their thoughts and opinions. We should be able to be open with each other in order to gain more momentum in having these conversations.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of racism of any kind, I think of a person that is jealous, prejudiced, discriminatory. People that are racist in my opinion are afraid of the person they are being racist towards. These are all words that I try to be the opposite of. As Johnson says, we all need to work together to put an end to racism. The fear I have is that people will never stop being jealous and in a way afraid of others. This is a battle that will continue for many years to come.
